worship recap 12.28.08

Contemporary Services (8:30/11:00)

  • EVERLASTING GOD (Bb) – our mix of Tomlin & Brewster’s version
  • welcome
  • FILLED WITH YOUR GLORY (G) – Starfield
  • YOU’RE WORTHY OF MY PRAISE (G) – Charlie Hall’s version
  • prayer
  • OPEN THE EYES OF MY HEART (E) – Baloche
  • communion – this is probably the last week I’m gonna do communion.   I’ve heard many positive comments about our communion time recently.  But I don’t want to make things “the steven show” and want to provide opportunities for other guys to use gifts.  I’m open to any thoughts on this…what do you think this time should be like?  What connects with you?

  • GOD OF THIS CITY (C) – Tomlin’s live version
  • challenge and prayer

Today we had a guest speaker, Danny Schaffner, from Common Ground in Tampa, FL.  Danny serves as the Lead Pastor and is the son-in-law of one of our HCC families, Mike and Judy Henry.

Common Ground is one of the ministries HCC supports.  Danny is doing a great work in the urban area of Tampa.  Started in 06, Common Ground is a multi-ethnic, diverse church plant.  He challenged us with a message from Nehemiah to restore our city for Christ.

The song “God of This City” was the perfect closer, but we hadn’t ever done it before.  Due to the holidays we didn’t have our regular practice, but the band spent time individually on it during the week, and did an AWESOME job with it!  We tried it with the click track, which added some cool loops and pads…but we learned a lesson in 1st service…you have to stick to the roadmap, or you’ll end before your tracks :)   Luckily, I went right into a prayer, so it sounded like great “mood music” over the prayer. LOL

1st service was a bit rocky, we really need the mid-week practice to get in the grove, but 3rd service was just amazing.  Musically it was great, but more than that, I really felt like the band and the congregation were fully engaged in worship.  The Tech Team did a great job…I heard several comments on the good sound today.

Traditional Service (9:45)

  • I WILL CALL UPON THE LORD
  • welcome
  • ALL HAIL THE POWER OF JESUS NAME
  • WE WILL GLORIFY
  • JESUS NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES
  • THE OLD RUGGED CROSS
  • I GAVE MY LIFE FOR THEE
  • communion
  • offering
  • message
  • SHINE, JESUS SHINE
  • prayer

We had a small crew for Traditional this week…just me on vocals and Nichole playing piano.  Actually, if we had another female voice, that’s my favorite line-up.  I just don’t dig the organ stuff very much…just not my style.

    Steve,

The service on the 24th, as well as on the 28th were awesome…I believe that we are pressing in to deeper levels of worship….creating an environment for God to move even more among us. Continue to stay on the playground….. lol….we have discussed that before….
    God continue to bless ya!

I can relate with missing that mid-week practice :) . I will be glad to get back to our regular schedule. Sounds like God of this city was the perfect song for your service!

I’m getting very excited about using God of this City more with our congregation, Java service and morning service. I’d really like to use it along with We must Go. Glad that it worked well for you. It’s taken off with our Java service and we find it very meaningful thinking of doing things within our little town.

    Communion: What connects with you?

Personally I like time to do business with God and always feel like there’s too little time. I know that quiet time always feels like hours up front but when someone is talking to God, it feels like seconds. But I’m aware of the need for balance. Some folks are not even comfortable speaking to God yet in our services. I also really enjoy having a worship song played in the background so that I can use those words to speak to Him.

Whilst I find it uncomfortable, I like going up to collect my own bread and wine. I find the discomfort important somehow.

On either side of communion I like to sing. Before, about what He’s done for me, and afterwards, my commitment to Him. Hope that helps. Just one perspective.

Thanks for sharing Louise. God of This City is a really powerful song, isn’t it.

I’m part of a fellowship that takes Communion each week. While I totally think this is biblical, I do think it presents a challenge. Anything you do every week can easily slip into a mindless ritual where you just go no autopilot. I guessing that might be a reason why you stated you like to come forward to get the emblems. There is a lot of significance to “stepping out of our comfort zones” and if you think about it, it really is very theological. Christ extends his love (He died for us) of His own choice. And He extends that to us freely…we must choose it for ourselves. He doesn’t force it on us. I see that as you come forward, you’re physically reminded that we choose to love Him, we choose to accept His grace. Just a thought…

We don’t come forward for our Communion, but I see a lot of benefits to doing it that way.
